Overview
Absolute Nairobi National Park Explorer:
A half day venture – 0600Hrs to 1200hrs or 1400Hrs to 1800Hrs
You leave the Karen Country Lodge and drive to the Nairobi Park headquarters. After processing our entry with the park authorities, we venture into this unique and un-spoilt wildlife haven within sight of the city's skyline.
We start our adventure with a 3-4 hours drive South from Nairobi to the world’s renowned Amboseli National Park, nestled on the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro on the southern border of Kenya and Tanzania.
The park is home to four members of the big five with the exception of the elephant. Rhino, buffalo, cheetah, zebra, giraffe, lion and plenty of antelopes and gazelles can be seen roaming in the open plains of the park. The park is also an ornithological paradise with over 400 bird species recorded.
Itinerary
Giraffe Centre – African Fund for Endangered Wildlife
Depart your Hotel at 0830hrs in the morning after your breakfast and head to the Giraffe Centre to arrive at 0900hrs in time when they open the center. Spend about an hour at the center and get enlightened about the conservation education activities at the center. This is where the breeding of the endangered Rothschild has been ongoing since its inception in the 1980s. Here you can hand feed the giraffes on a raised platform. Apart from that, they do have a 100-acre nature sanctuary through which you can take a walk..
David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
Leave the Giraffe centre at 1015hrs and head for the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to experience the modest work done to conserve orphaned baby elephants. Located inside Nairobi National Park, DSWT is a trust harboring young orphaned baby elephants and rhinos and go through the process of re-introducing them back into their wild natural habitat *The orphanage is only opened between 11am and 12pm.
Lunch
After the elephant orphanage visit head to Matbronze for your lunch as well as sample some souvenirs. There is an option of sampling African Art and Crafts souvenirs at Utamaduni Craft centre on your way to Mat bronze
Karen Blixen Museum
Leave Utamaduni at 1400hrs and head to Karen Blixen Museum for an approximate 1hour tour exploring the farmhouse where Karen Blixen, author of ‘Out of Africa’ lived between 1914 and 1931. She left after a series of personal tragedies and the house has been preserved as a museum. A part in the movie ‘Out of Africa’ starring Merryl Streep and Robert Redford was shot around the house
Kazuri Bead Factory
Thereafter leave the museum and visit the nearby Kazuri Bead Factory. Kazuri means “Small & Beautiful” in Swahili and the factory began in 1975 as a tiny workshop experimenting on hand making beads. Kazuri provides employment to the Kenyans, a larger percentage of women covered thus empowering women. After this you return to your lodge/hotel for a relaxing evening.
