Rwanda & Northern Tanzania Safari
Day 1: Kigali-Volcanoes National Park
Morning arrival at the Kigali International airport where you will be met by your private guide and proceed north on a 3-4hrs drive to the foothills of the volcanoes that make up Volcanoes National Park checking in at the Mountain gorilla view lodge for a late lunch, relaxed afternoon and overnight stay. (D)
Day 2: Volcanoes National Park
Early breakfast before proceeding to the park head quarters where visitors assemble at 07.00 for a briefing on how to” behave” while in the company of a gorilla group. You will meet your guide here and proceed to the starting point of the trek to our allocated group of gorillas. The length of the trek varies depending on where the gorillas are as well as the weather conditions.
It is important to bring good hiking boots, long trousers and gloves for protection against stinging nettles, some snacks & sweets as well as sufficient amount of water as the rain forest gets hot and humid during the day. You spend one hour with the gorillas which is a truly amazing experience before trekking back to the base and return to the lodge for late lunch and overnight stay (B,L,D)
Day 3: Volcanoes National park-Kigali
Another one of the interesting and unique treks available in “Volcanoes National Park” is a trek to a species even more endangered than the “Mountain Gorillas” – to the “Golden Monkeys”. It is only in Rwanda where this interesting species has been successfully habituated. After an early breakfast, we will be picked from our lodge for 20-40 minutes drive to the park gate. After some briefing from our designated ‘Golden monkey guide’ from the park authorities, we drive further into the park till our trek starting point. We spend about 2 hours trekking checking out the monkeys. We then return to the lodge for a late lunch and afternoon transfer to Kigali. Overnight Hotel Rwanda. (B,L,D
Day 4: Arusha
Morning at leisure with option of a tour of Kigali, visit the Genocide memorial museum and a chance for some last minute shopping. Early lunch and thereafter, 2.30PM flight to Kilimanjaro airport in Arusha, Tanzania. On arrival you will be met and transferred to the lovely Bay Leaf hotel for overnight stay. (B)
Day 5: Ngorongoro Conservation Area
After breakfast, we take a 3-4 hours drive through the scenic countryside to the Ngorongoro highlands checking in at the lovely Gibbs farm house. Today we have options of taking guided nature and farm walks or venture out into the nearby town of Karatu visiting the local market for a chance to buy some souveniers and visit a local village for an insight into the culture and traditions of the local people. Meals and overnight Gibbs farm house. (B, L, D)
Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater
Today, we visit the Ngorongoro crater, one of the most impressive wildlife areas in Africa and has been designated a World Heritage site. We drive down inside the 100 square mile Ngorongoro crater to view wildlife on the vast grasslands of the crater floor. Throughout the year a spectacular parade of animal life may be found within the crater; black maned lion, the highly endangered black rhino, wildebeest, zebra, elephant, hippo, jackal, and hyena. The birdlife is prolific with flocks of flamingoes on the soda lake as well as other species of water and plains birds. As the sun starts to go down, we drive up the steep crater wall to spend the night at the Ngorongoro Serena lodge perched high up on the rim of the crater with magnificent views of the Ngorongoro. (B, L, D) Days 7,8 and 9: Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, we drive down to the Serengeti national park with a stopover at Olduvai Gorge; the famous archeological site where the Leakey's discovered remains of Australopithecus Homo habilis and Homo erectus. We spend the next three days in the Serengeti, arguably the most impressive wildlife sanctuary in the world.
At certain times of the year these vast, seemingly unending plains, are inhabited by enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra. In the calving season (February-March) the herds concentrate at the Ndutu and Salei plains attracting the attention of predators like lion, cheetah and hyena. Another interesting feature of the Serengeti are the massive granite kopjes; islands of rock standing in a sea of grass.
from the elusive leopard to the tiny dik dik the kopjes provide shelter to a great variety of plants and animals. Days will be spent on guided wildlife viewing drives while nights will be enjoyed deep in the Serengeti at the luxurious Sanctuary Kusini tented camp (B, L, D)
Day 10: Departure Day
Breakfast followed by a farewell morning game drive enroute back to airstrip for your 11am flight back to Kilimanjaro international airport for onward connection with your flight back home marking the end of a memorable East African safari (B)
